“There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm.” – Willa Cather
You can do more than you think you can if you just trust yourself to do it. Sometimes once you’ve done it, you have no idea how, but it worked, and that’s all that matters.
Sleeping, painting.
Soup dumplings.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral – my favorite type of architecture is Gothic, I love the detail of the stone and all the intricate carvings, so seeing this in the middle of NYC surrounded by more plain/modern/glass buildings is a really nice juxtaposition.
I don’t think I have a long-term favorite quote but recently a quote that is attributed to Abraham Lincoln has stuck with me – “I may walk slowly, but I never walk backward.”
With everyone having so many ways to interact with friends, clients and colleagues, and strangers instantaneously all the time I appreciate the idea that moving quickly for the sake of being in motion or keeping ourselves busy isn’t necessarily as important as making sure we are moving in the right direction.
Also – “In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.” – Douglas Adams
Be charitable. Give your time, give your trust, give your expertise. There will be times when a client may waste your time with mundane questions, a consultant may disappoint you by not delivering what you trusted they would provide, and a colleague may not proceed the way you would have after your guidance but in my experience being generous with the people I work with allows them to thrive which in turn yields rewards for all.
I enjoy hiking on weekends with my wife and dog and try to get away for a couple of weekend camping trips every summer.
Also impossible, but probably something bright and flavorful like chicken piccata or if you stretch the definition of food – I would say a good Manhattan.
This is an impossible question, but I really like the New York Times headquarters building by Renzo Piano and Fox & Fowle. I watched it being built commuting into the PABT early in my career. I like the idea that with some planning and interesting detailing one of the largest buildings in NYC can be built to be far more efficient than comparably sized buildings. I also really enjoy the exposed structure and scrim façade creating an attractive building without requiring the lights, colors, and gimmicks a lot of the development in the area relies on.
